Sea bed sampling can be performed using the rotary drilling apparatus on board the Greatship Maya.

Three basic sampling/coring approaches can be performed:

  • Undisturbed (with or without piston) sampling
  • Rock Coring / Piggy back coring.
  •  Wireline hammer sampling

Undisturbed sampling is done with a Wison – APB tool  operated through API standard  drill pipes .  This allows for continuous undisturbed samples to be retrieved in water depths up to 2000 meters and sample depths to client specifications.

Rock Coring can be performed using a selection of core barrels and bits onboard.  Core barrel options include Longyear HQ3, and API PQ3.  Coring can allow for continuous rock cores to be retrieved in water depths up to 2000 meters and core depths to client specifications.

The Greatship Maya has a drill derrick on board sitting above a moon pool with the following features:

Rough necks at Derrick Base

Drillers preparing down hole tool

  • 32 meter derrick with 100MT pull capacity
  • 3.5 meter stroke heavy compensation with 80 MT capacity
  • Top drive – Rotary drill F150. 23k ft lb torque. 80 – 100 rpm
  • Drill string length 2000 meters – API  5 ½”
